It is 10 times easier to learn spanish(which is a very simple and easy to use language) than it is for those from other countries to learn English as English is one of the hardest languages to speak. We have too many letters that are silent, and letters that when put in certain words, sound completely different than when they are alone. It’s very confusing!!! All countries could benefit from learning another language since we constantly do business with other countries.

I think the obvious reason is the same one anyone uses for learning a language. It’s something to put on the resume. It broadens the mind. It’s a useful tool to have, and although you said you didn’t want to hear it, it’s inevitably going to help americans communicate with the large number of mexican immigrants in the country……I am though, a firm believer in “My country – my language” and would strongly favour all mexicans having to speak english if they wish to live in america.

I can some benefits of us learning Spanish. But I see even more benefits of them learning English. That way we can stop bending over backwards for them.
When my great grandparents came over here from Sweden and Romania. Did people have food labels and what not written in Swedish and Romanian? They got no special treatment whatsoever. So I think the immigrants should learn and speak English just like everyone else who has immigrated here from a different language speaking country.

Learning different languages can help you very much in college, work and just to learn morre about different people. It really helps when you are working in a factory which has become about 70% Mexican with about 30% being illegal.
It is really nice when you can understand the insults, understand when they are talking dirty about your wife, and know when they laugh at you for busting your *ss.

It also is very good when you are their supervisor in a meat processing plant and you have to crawl inside a bone crusher machine.
If you can comunicate in Spanish then they have no reason to laugh and claim they did not understand your directions after they turn it on and cause you to almost be crushed.
They had started jamming the machine on purpose after I streamlined the process to avoid overtime for my company.
I messed with their overtime profits, they tried to kill me.

Well…I like to travel, so I love to learn languages. I also work with preschool children, many whose families speak Spanish but have limited English. They are not illegals, they are here legally (mostly as migrant workers – with all the required LEGAL paperwork) and it sure helps to be able to communicate to these parents when I see them. Otherwise, I’d be using state money to get an interpreter. FYI, that is the real world. The children I work with have special needs, and require the services we provide. Don’t you dare say that this is not ‘real’. It’s likely more real than your work. Are you under the completely false assumption that anyone who speaks Spanish is illegal?? If so, please do a bit of research first.

I have found no benefit, but near the end of my undergrad studies it seemed more common to find job postings for span/eng speakers so I was forced to learn. I know you stated you didn’t want any comment regarding illegals. Well, this is not just illegals. There are many others who are legal and THEY refused to learn our language. As such our stupid government feels we must accomodate them and be sensitive to their culture. We are the only stupid nation in the world who feels pity for other cultures and language barriers. Go to Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc… and you better know some Spanish. And in my opinion why should they? We are in there territory which is what we should finally adopt. You are in our territory learn English or remain unemployed eating dirt.

Most Hispanics (Spanish Speakers) do not speak Spanish actually. They have dialects.. they have a great deal of difficulty passing Spanish Classes, and there is a huge amount of slang along the border, but through out Mexico for example.
And while there may be 48 million people speaking Spanish in this country, when 30 million illegal aliens go home, very, very few people will speak Spanish. But the folks who do speak their version of Spanish desperately want US to speak Spanish because they cannot learn to speak English.
And yes… all the versions of Spanish make that a widely spoken language in the world. But when you look, the majority of the people speaking Spanish speak a mixture that is actually 20% Spanish, and 80% local dialog (Indian Dialects throughout Spanish America).
Chinese, I think, is the most widely spoken language in the world. English is number two. It may pass Chinese soon because so many Chinese are speaking English now. (There are many dialects in China and one dialect cannot always be understood by another dialect….) English is the compromise common business language in China, India, Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.
