None. If you go to work in the Latin American Countries, you have to find out the subtleties of the corruption before you can do business, and then you need to be trusted. But that would be THE reason for learning the language.

Most Hispanics (Spanish Speakers) do not speak Spanish actually. They have dialects.. they have a great deal of difficulty passing Spanish Classes, and there is a huge amount of slang along the border, but through out Mexico for example.

And while there may be 48 million people speaking Spanish in this country, when 30 million illegal aliens go home, very, very few people will speak Spanish. But the folks who do speak their version of Spanish desperately want US to speak Spanish because they cannot learn to speak English.

And yes… all the versions of Spanish make that a widely spoken language in the world. But when you look, the majority of the people speaking Spanish speak a mixture that is actually 20% Spanish, and 80% local dialog (Indian Dialects throughout Spanish America).

Chinese, I think, is the most widely spoken language in the world. English is number two. It may pass Chinese soon because so many Chinese are speaking English now. (There are many dialects in China and one dialect cannot always be understood by another dialect….) English is the compromise common business language in China, India, Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.

What can you say? You can yahoo that, by the way. World Common Language.

I have found no benefit, but near the end of my undergrad studies it seemed more common to find job postings for span/eng speakers so I was forced to learn. I know you stated you didn’t want any comment regarding illegals. Well, this is not just illegals. There are many others who are legal and THEY refused to learn our language. As such our stupid government feels we must accomodate them and be sensitive to their culture. We are the only stupid nation in the world who feels pity for other cultures and language barriers. Go to Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc… and you better know some Spanish. And in my opinion why should they? We are in there territory which is what we should finally adopt. You are in our territory learn English or remain unemployed eating dirt.

In some states it helps you get a job, but in truth we need to consider refusing to learn Spanish. Languages are taught in our high schools and colleges. I learned German. There are many languages of the world to consider.

It DOES benefit to learn another language.

BUT, that decision to learn a new language, and which language should be of an individuals’ choosing.

No one should be forced to learn a language whose sole purpose is to wet-nurse those who are too lazy and ignorant to learn the national language of, and refuse to integrate into the country they chose to reside in, regardless of legal status.

Well…I like to travel, so I love to learn languages. I also work with preschool children, many whose families speak Spanish but have limited English. They are not illegals, they are here legally (mostly as migrant workers – with all the required LEGAL paperwork) and it sure helps to be able to communicate to these parents when I see them. Otherwise, I’d be using state money to get an interpreter. FYI, that is the real world. The children I work with have special needs, and require the services we provide. Don’t you dare say that this is not ‘real’. It’s likely more real than your work. Are you under the completely false assumption that anyone who speaks Spanish is illegal?? If so, please do a bit of research first.

It is of no particular greater benefit to learn Spanish vs. any other foreign language in the U.S.. College students (and many high school students) take a foreign language of their choice, as should be.

We have many millions of people that speak literally dozens of languages in the U.S., so suggesting that we learn another language so we can communicate with these people is ludicrous.

They learn our language, not the other way around.

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian…shall I go on??

It is good to learn a foreign langauge, but suggesting that ALL Americans should learn one particular foreign language is wrong.

Negative KMDS

Any language that is NOT English in the U.S. is foreign. The common language in the U.S. is ENGLISH. PERIOD.

Any immigrants in the U.S. not willing or not able to learn English will be isolated from communicating with the vast majority of citizens of this country.

It really helps when you are working in a factory which has become about 70% Mexican with about 30% being illegal.

It is really nice when you can understand the insults, understand when they are talking dirty about your wife, and know when they laugh at you for busting your *ss.

Everyone likes to say how hard they work, I have heard them talk about slowing down so they could get overtime to finish the job.

It also is very good when you are their supervisor in a meat processing plant and you have to crawl inside a bone crusher machine.

If you can comunicate in Spanish then they have no reason to laugh and claim they did not understand your directions after they turn it on and cause you to almost be crushed.

They had started jamming the machine on purpose after I streamlined the process to avoid overtime for my company.
I messed with their overtime profits, they tried to kill me.

These thing have all happened to me, that is part of why I **** illegals worse than I did before, and also why I refuse to work any where if they are hired by managment.
