Should Spanish speaking Latinos be forced to learn English?

I was at Walmart today, and there were so many people who were speaking nothing but Spanish. I thought i my head, that this is America, why are these people speaking Spanish? Then I realized that Spanish is there native language. I think that even though there native language is Spanish, they should by law have to learn English. If they refuse to I think they should be forced too. In my opinion this is America, not Cuba, or any Spanish speaking country. Everybody makes it such a big deal that were all Americans, but were a bunch of different cultures, which I consider pretty disgusting. How do you know that they don’t speak English? Just because they were speaking Spanish doesn’t mean that they didn’t know English. If you went to another country, and you and your family members were getting groceries you would speak in English. Language is just a way for people to get their message across to someone else, stop making a big deal out of people getting groceries.

I don’t think they should be “forced” to learn English, but I don’t think anyone should offering signs and phone answering messages in languages other than English either. If anyone can’t speak English it may behoove them to learn if they know they aren’t going to see/hear anything but English when they’re living their day-to-day lives in the US.
I don’t find it at all offensive that a few Spanish people speak their own language to one another at, say, WalMart. If I were in France with my relatives or friends I’d still speak English to them. What they’re saying to each other in their own language (whatever it may be) isn’t my business anyway.
I’m not a fan of having people come to this country and try to turn their little part of it into “Little Mexico” or “Little France” or “Little Whatever Country They Come From”, though.

If i’m going to go to another country I will take the time to learn their language.
However if they come here they better damn well learn english. I don’t think I’m raciest because i set that bar for everyone that comes to america. If i set that bar to just one group then maybe I would be.
I’m learning japanese because me and my roomies are planning on going ot japan for 2 weeks next year.

Too much important data is in English in the U.S. I’m sure most immigrants want to learn English. However, if my mother raised me speaking Spanish and I was talking to her, OF COURSE I would speak Spanish.

Okay, so if I was Swedish and I lived in Sweden and I’m in some store with a few Americans in it, who are speaking english, and I think to myself “This is Sweden, not an English speaking country. Everyone should be forced to learn Swedish if they don’t already know it.”
Think about that.

But it’d be a better idea to learn it.

Not forced, no. But if they’re going to work at a place where they’re required to communicate with English speakers then they should at least have a working knowledge of the language.

Well, my family is largely Hispanic, and we only speak English, so I understand your situation. I’ve had tons of people assume I speak Spanish when I don’t, or people who approach me and begin to speak Spanish, assuming that I understand what they’re saying. It’s very frustrating. The funny part is, after I tell them I only speak English, they begin to speak English too.
A lot of them do, in fact, speak English, but instead choose to speak Spanish because they’re more comfortable with it. Nevertheless, I do realize there really are some who know absolutely no English, and I do support the idea that they need to learn it.

I would assume that White settlers from Europe did not have to learn Iroquois, Cherokee, or Algonquian, right? If so, why force the Hispanics to abandon their language and their culture in favor of superficial assimilation?
Yes, Hispanics must be encouraged to learn English, but forced? No. Not at all. Eventually, they will learn English (in the proper and due time).
And besides, the United States of America, unlike other countries such as Slovakia or Sweden, was not built for a group of peple with ONE culture and ONE language. The USA was built by the Founding Fathers for all men who desire liberty. How then can you force Hispanics to learn English when in fact, liberty is the building block of American society?
Not to mention that the multicultural environment actually helped bring America up. If America was only populated by the Whites and the Native Americans, then widespread racism might have occurred and this would bring America down.
So the answer is a resounding no. Hispanics have the right and freedom NOT to be forcibly taught English, but to learn it step-by-step in a manner that they will eventually learn to speak it fluently. However, it would greatly help their social mobility if they do acquire a good command of English.

1st generation Asian Immigrants are forced to learn English BEFORE they leave to come to America.
1st generation Eastern European immigrants are FORCED to learn English before they leave to come to America.
Most Spanish speaking immigrant SHOULD be treated equally (I mean seriously, if Asian people are forced to learn English before they come to the US then ALL immigrants should be forced to learn English. I am tired of this crap about “OOOOOO America be melting pot mang, no need for uz to learnz dah Engliz!”, uh no!
We need to be able to communicate properly with one another.
Also don’t bring up this crap about “what if they are illegal?”, weellllllllllllllll, if they are illegal (they don’t have to be Spanish, they can be from ANY nation and come here illegally)

Now our education system has this BS of making foreign languages necessary for HS students because they believe it will make us “smarter”. They want the US to emulate Europe.

In Japan you NEED to know Japanese in order to live there or they WILL kick you out. Japan is 10 times smarter than any European country (western or Eastern) and NO ONE there needs to learn German, Italian, Spanish, French or any of that. Foreign Languages are not even needed there in the education system!
Pretty soon foreign languages will no longer be mandatory. If America is smart and tries to emulate the best in education (Asia not literature minded Europe).

i always speak to my children in our native language, kanien:kaha. (that’s mohawk language, which you might have known if your ancestors had bothered to learn the languages here when they decided to become squatters) i speak to them in our language especially in public. i’ve had people ask me what the language is so i tell them. one guy said he thought it was a wonderful thing that people could speak a foreign language. i replied, “like english?” he got it and even laughed at himself.
there is no official language in north america. let people speak whatever language they want to each other. you said it..you couldn’t understand them and that’s what REALLY pissed you off.
