I Need Help Learning Spanish?
misskitty715 asked:
I will be moving to Miami in about 4 months. It is a short time, I know. I have checked out the free spanish programs online already. I recently purchased a learn spanish computer program and have finished the beginner course. I watch the spanish station. I listen to the spanish radio station also. My concern now is that the information is not sticking. Does anyone have any advice on retaining the lessons. I’m also concerned that I can’t really pick up on spoken spanish. I think I’m doing ok with written though. I would love to have someone to chat or email with in spanish. Any relevant advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, experience taught me that practice is the best tool. Once you start hearing people speak the language it will help you pick it up faster. Now when you get the opportunity to practice DO NOT HESITATE, and do not feel ashamed, or think that people will make fun of you, if you do, you will never learn the language.
Now, the trick with Spanish is that you need to know the rules. Learn the rules, and once you get there it will be easy to pick up.
Easy To Learn Spanish
There really is no better way to learn another language other than immersing yourself in the environment . See if you can meet at least one person who speaks it and spend as much as you can with them and asking them to translate for you. Funny..but I learned some Spanish at a taqueria.
For example, I have learned to say “Queiro un burrito para llevar, por favor” which translates to “I want a burrito to go, please”. The cashier snickered…but she later said to me “Hasta luego!” which I learned is “until then!”…. See? Your stomach and your brain gets fed at the same time!!!
When I am with my Spanish friend, I always ask him “Como se dice [fill in the blank in English] en Espanol?” which translates to “How do you say [fill in the blank in English] in Spanish?”

Learn Spanish Lessons
The best thing to do is keep it up. I took Spanish for 7 years in school and would forget a lot of what I learned over the summer vacations between school years. The best thing to do is keep it in your head. Watching tv and listening to tapes is good, especially right before going to sleep.
Listening to spanish speakers is also harder than reading or writing, but it will get easier. I minored in spanish in college, and every professor I had said that the best experience is going to a place where spanish is spoken. Unfortunately, that’s not very practical. I don’t know of any tricks really. The one thing it took me a while to learn was that it’s virtually impossible to learn every expression and piece of vocabulary and that when you are forced to use the language you can express yourself just fine with what you do know.
Good luck though, however you learn it!
