I learn Turkish independantly.

If you are serious about dedicating a certain amount of time to learning the language, create a time pattern that you will stick to and do the following.

1. Log on to
- create a user account and get involved and get to know people!

2. Download the free programme – BYKI (before you know it) search it on google.

3. Buy three (or more) seperate notebooks,.
they should cost no more than £2 each. These notebooks will be used to noting down your leaning. For example, you can use one notebook for grammer, one for general vocabulary, and another for phrases.

4. Buy “coloured pens” or “glitter gel pens”.
It’s proven, and is a common trick to those studyign for exams for school, or university, that the brain will get, let’s say, “bored” of black pen. Therefor the words will not stitch to memory. However, coloured pens will help use enhance your leaning and remembering,

5. Make “cards”.
Card can also only cost a few pennies, you can use different colours and perhaps even make “open up cards” where you will put words in English, and Turkish to help learn.

6. Find out what kind of learner you are.
You can do tests online to find out what helps you learn best, maybe it’s writing down information, or drawing pictures, or hearing words and repeating them. However, find this out quickly! No point in useing useless methods.

7. Buy plenty of polly pockets and ring binders.
This is to sort out your notes and information and keep them seperate

8. Buy a ‘picture book’ and a turk-eng dictionary.
This is to increase your general vocabulary.

9. Create folders on your computer.
Pre-organise what you wish to learn and set yourself targets for when you must know a certain list of vocabulary.

10. Create tests.
create assesments for yourself to see how well you are doign and where you are struggling.

Where should you start?
I suggest you get your head down and figure out “vowel harmony”.
This is so confusing and will drive you absolutely out of your brain nuts!

Secondly, figure out how you can use vowel harmony with suffixes. The quicker you get this done with the better.

You should learn what extra letters they have in their alphabet, how the pronounce their words (this can only ‘truely’ be done with a visit to turkey), learn numbers, colours.

you can ask about anything on turkishclass.com if you are stuck, set objectives and make sure you are ebing realistic about how much you learn. It takes time, patience,dedication.

And in between your formal learning, you should be doing all you can to learn.

For example: you are watching a DVD with your mates, ask them polietely if you can add Turkish subtitles (high quality DVDs will have this). When you go to the gym, play some turkish music on your ipod, although you may not understand a word of it, it gives you an idea of how turkish people speak. When you go anywhere, and you see an item, try and name it in Turkish inside your head.
