Why is it that America is almost forcing Americans to learns Spanish. It’s like if you don’t know it you’ll be at a disadvantage in getting employed. Spanish is fine but this is America if Spanish people want to live here they should learn English not the other way around. European countries would never do this. Wake up America! What do you think?

you dont need to learn spanish. but lets say you are running a business in area with a large hispanic population, wouldn’t you want to reach out to them for business ? if you learn spanish you will be able to gain a financial advantage over rival companies that don’t speak spanish. and they are learning english.

I don’t think anyone can force you to learn. If you want to better yourself, learning another language can be beneficial. I wouldn’t mind to learn Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean although I already speak 2 languages fluently. Lots of European speak at least 4-5 languages.
China will be a power country in the next 30 years if you want to compete globally, learning another language is a must. You have the right to choose NOT to learn another language but don’t be surprise if you travel, not knowing another language can be disadvantage. I can see why some people in this country can’t compete.

i agree that we shouldn’t have to, schools are forcing students to take a language, and all the schools i’ve looked into provide spanish and french classes, but none have had the languages i actually want to learn!
but learning spanish would be helpful for most businesses because many people in america do speak spanish.

I think it’s sad to see people resist to learn another language. I’m on the other hand would love to speak any other languages besides what I’m already speaking. I would pay to learn Spanish or any other languages if I have a chance.
Lots of companies in the US are looking bi-lingual. Those people who can speak another language are more valuable to the company. They also get pay extra for speaking another language. I know my company offers the service and extra pay for those who can speak Spanish.

I don’t say English because we do not speak true English.If we did we’d be listening to BBC all the time. I don’t remember what it was my daughter bought but it had to be put together. None of the instructions were english, if it had not been they had such good drawings we would not have known how it fit together. What I think is we need to do something, the only bad part is there is to much apathy, let someone else do it, I’ll sign a petition, but I can’t do anything else. Yes you can, you can write letters to any and all politians, with your views and complaints and suggestions, got arthritus, dictate a letter to some one in your family, then sign it. Ask someone to type it up for you and sign it. Can’t afford stamps, got a computer? No? Does anyone you know? They can help you do it. Well I better get off my soap box and get dinner. We need more of you out there raising the questions, and it will be interesting to see how many respond to yours.

In school it was mandatory that we take three years of Spanish… I flunked out of every Spanish class because I’ve just never been interested in learning the language. Nothing against the culture or the people, I just don’t like the way it sounds, don’t like the way it feels to speak, and even though it’s wicked close, I’ve got less a desire to visit Latin America than anywhere else in the world… maybe after Asia, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and Africa I’ll get around to it.
I wish schools offered you more choices (some don’t even give you a choice). If I’d been able to take Chinese or Japanese I’d have jumped on it… instead, every time I had to get up in front of class, I’d say, “Odelay homes! Yo, uno burrito y frijoles negro y arroz y crema y guacamole y salsa picante, por favor!” That’s the only spanish I ever use or have ever really cared to know how to use.
I learned Japanese instead.
