What’s a good resource to learn basic Spanish in a few months?

littlefurballs asked:

I’ll be traveling to Peru this July and my “Idiots Guide to Learning Spanish” is not as helpful as I thought it would be! :) Does anyone have a good resource that they can suggest that would help someone learn basic Spanish to use in another country, within a few months? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

i pretty much had to be in a spanish-speaking country before i made any real progress
so my advice would be, try to spend more time in peru and sign up for some classes in a great place down there, e.g. Cuzco or Arequipa for a few weeks, live with a family, try to get a girl/boy friend there

Your best resource: travel to Peru a few months early.

Sad to say, no amount of language training will prepare you to hear and speak the language unless you’re using it regularly, and ideally immersed in it. It’s like music; you can read all the music books you want, and sing along to the notes, but unless you’re playing the instrument you’ll get nowhere fast.

In a pinch, find people you know who speak Spanish, and ask them to spend a few hours a week with you speaking only in Spanish — not teaching you per se, but just talking about stuff. At first your conversations will be incredibly limited, but you’ll quickly get greetings, goodbyes and basic questions/answers in this way.

Finally, watch exclusively Spanish television for the next few months, even if you don’t know what’s going on; you’ll get used to the rhythms and the subtleties that way, so that (as you learn words and phrases) you’ll have an easier time recognizing them when you hear them in real time.

    Good luck, enjoy your trip.
