Second, the language that dominates in a country is the language of the powerful and educated. While the business sector is willing to hire Spanish-only speakers to provide cheap labor in menial jobs and more than happy to market to them in Spanish so as to sell them company products and services, how many businesses would hire someone who only spoke Spanish to fill a well-paying professional position? Also consider the frequently unimpressive educational attainment of many hispanics–especially those that only speak Spanish–in a knowledge-based economy. Futhermore, the path to an education is often paved in English. While some public schools may offer bilingual education at the K-12 levels on your way to a mediocre high school diploma, how many reputable college and universities will grant you a degree unless you know English? Indeed, a great many of the most successful immigrants in the country are Asian, who frequently either already are or become well-educated and embrace learning English.

A more likely secenario (although not a forgone conclusion either) would be for Spanish to perhaps reach some form of parity in those southwestern states where the hispanic population is especially concentrated and perhaps a token recognition at the national level. Indeed, although French is not the majority language in Canada as a whole it still does enjoy the status of second language in an officially bilingual nation and is the dominant tongue in Quebec where French-Canadians are concentrated. This may be as far as Spanish could go in the United States–if even that far. Another possibility along the lines of what commentators already bring up is that the United States could become a more class-divided society with a large hispanic underclass.

Spanish will continue to play an important role in the United States and the hispanic population will continue to wield significant political power, but I sometimes wonder if we don’t sometimes exaggerate it.

i have a dictionary called ultralingua and im using Rosetta Stone. the problem with rosetta stone is that it teaches you the words and how to say it. but it doesnt tell you what each word means or why the grammer is used in that way or how to use the rules of the language. they just show a picture and what it is. i want to be able to know what each word in a sentence means.
any comments? please dont respond with “buy some books” or anything that i already know. i want to learn it from the net, free.

so i took 4 years of spanish in high school plus one quarter in college. when i am at work promoting a product and sometimes i might bust out some spanish if i think the person might need me to tell them what it is bc they dont know english/say it for fun. a girl i worked with says dont try b/c i might say something wrong (fuck no i took 4 years in high school). i think she gets insulted when ppl assumes she speaks chinese or whatever but shes mexican.

so my question is how would you feel if someone approached you to try a product out and spoke spanish with you?

my opinion: i think if anyone spoke another language with me i would laugh and smile and be happy that they thought i oculd speak another language or looked like another ethnicity.
