What’s the most efficient way to learn a new language?

Missy asked:

I’m trying to learn Spanish. I’m over half way done with the Rosetta Stone program and have done a lot of the content on studyspanish.com, but my Spanish is still super lousy. Using Free Online resources, how can I obtain fluency?

Ways to learn Spanish FAST?

KabbaSurabie asked:

I just started a job in a town with a very high Hispanic population. I work within elementary schools and probably 85% of the kids are bilingual–and maybe 20% are more comfortable speaking (and learning) in Spanish.

Add to that the fact that many of the parents ONLY speak Spanish, and you can see my problem. Being bilingual isn’t a requirement for my job, but it would sure make things easier.

I’ve already looked into the local community college, and it just doesn’t fit in with my schedule–at all. I’d prefer to take a class, but it’s not an option.

So what are some really effective ways that I can learn conversational Spanish quickly? I’ve heard that Rosetta Stone is good, but it’s also really expensive and I don’t want to “experiment” because they have a policy against reselling their products (via Amazon, Ebay, etc).

So, yeah, any help/advice would be great.

I might combine some CDs with a private tutor just to get the ball rolling. Money is a bit of an issue. I’m willing to spend money on a good quality CD program, but I’m wary about “wasting” money on something that may or may not work for me.

Uh…for the record, I JUST started this JOB so I can’t take time off to go to Mexico just so I can learn Spanish. Maybe someday, but not in the next several months, at least.

What I’m really looking for are suggestions of language-learning software (similar to Rosetta Stone but, hopefully, a little cheaper) that I could use.

Is Rosetta Stone the best way to learn Spanish, other than immersion?

Erica asked:

Before I spend a lot of money on this program, by your experience, is it effective? If I were to go through the whole program– all levels– how fluent would I become? Should I use Rosetta Stone along with another program/ book? Do you have any suggestions?

I am looking at the possibility of teaching in a school with a large Hispanic population and really don’t want to always have to have a translator to communicate, especially to parents. In the next two years of using Rosetta Stone on a frequent and regular basis, I’m hoping it would get me to the level I need to be at in order to communicate and understand Spanish effectively in that manner.

Thank you! :)

I cant decide between Rosetta Stone, Learning Spanish Like Crazy , or Aurolog. I’ve heard great things about all of these programs, but I think Learning Spanish Like Crazy might be the best so far. What do you think?
